Central event of Riga Photography Biennale 2016 - exhibition “Restart”

From April 22, 2016, the exhibition hall Riga Art Space will host the exhibition of contemporary art and photography “RESTART”, organized by the Riga Photography Biennale in cooperation with the Association of Cultural Institutions of Riga City Council. The exhibition will be open until June 12.

Every hour, every minute, all we do is create new layers of memories, until over the last few decades they have lost the ephemeral, romantically hazy, evocative consistency of visions, and then also the brittle, yellowed materiality of photographic paper or film. At the same time, the availability of technology has led most people to believe that to live fully in this age of communication, we all need to photographically document and, wherever possible, with lightning speed, publish everything we do: what we eat, what we look at, how we look, what we have done in our personal and professional lives.

The contemporary art and photography exhibition Restart will be characterised by the idea of the need to understand today's world more deeply, highlighting its dialectical relationship with the past and the future. Restart will thus include works by 18 artists, which will show and tell impressions about the existence of a new, remarkable view of the past and will demonstrate a masterclass in the recycling of images in the face of mental pollution. At the same time, the exhibition will highlight the current trends in photography as an artistic practice, as the rapid development of modern technologies has led to a re-evaluation of the meaning of images and the messages they convey.

The exhibition features artists from Latvia, the Baltics, Europe and the United States: Amalia Ulman (USA), Agnieszka Polska (PL/DE), Witek Orski (PL), Eva Stenram (SE/UK), Natasha Caruana (UK), Isabelle Wenzel (DE), Alexander Ugay( KZ), Camille Laurelli (FR/EE), Zane Mellupe (LV/CN), Meggy Rustamova (GE/BE), Danila Tkachenko (RU), Jana Romanova (RU), Laura Prikule (LV), Karoliina Paappa (FI), Katinka Goldberg (SE/NO), Paul Herbst (LT/DE), Arnas Anskaitis (LT) and Uldis Briedis (LV).
